Catfish farming is more than stocking certain number of juveniles, feeding and selling them after certain period of time. 1. Security Check: On a daily basis, irrespective of the fact that you have security personnel on your farm, it is recommended that you or your representative go round your ponds to check for security flops or threats to the security of your farm. This is very important, and some farmers that failed to conduct regular security check in the time past had themselves to blame. The check I’m referring to may not be necessary in other types of ponds except earthen pond. Once your fishes are up to three months old, you may not need to get rid of grasses at the inner part of your dike until you are ready to sell. Carefully observe your dike if there is any strange movement or entrance into the pond of your grow out fish. Grasses at the inner part of your pond will show if there is any movement into your pond. Often times, security guards that should help secure your pond can be the ones constituting security threat to your farm. Many times, security guards have been caught stealing fishes on a regular basis from their principal’s farms. So don’t rely too much on them.
Now that raining season has started, check for parts of your dikes that need repair. This must be done any time it rains. Also, farmers must check their feed storehouse for any manipulation because some attendants can be so difficult.

Security checks on regularly basis will keep you on red alert to effect corrections whenever it is needed. It will save you a lot of stress and fortune.

2. Mortality Check: Never feed your fishes without checking round your pond for presence of mortalities or otherwise. This will help you to know whether or not to feed your fishes. In bushy ponds, farmers must be extra careful when inspecting ponds for mortality. This is due to the fact that dead fishes could be held by the plants at the inner part of your dike. Although mortalities can be easily discovered if you have an active sense of smell, it will take up to 24 hours before dead fish begins to smell. Don’t forget that the earlier you discover problems on your farm the better.

3. Response Check: How your fishes respond to your arrival and feeding speaks volume about their state of health and stability. Good response to your movement along the dike of their pond and feeding is an indication of wellness. However, something may be wrong if your fishes are not responding well to feeding especially when regular feeding time is observed in your farm. Don’t just watch, take necessary action. Your business is your life.
