Pig Waste Management
Keeping our farm clean is the key to raise healthy and thriving pigs. We must daily remove their waste from the shelters and pig pens, because they attract flies and insects. During the summer heat, it is beneficial to put a livestock fan inside the shelter so as to promote good ventilation.

The farmers shall examine the ways in which they can take advantage of their pigs waste. They can use it as manure in their crops, donate it to a local farmers union or sell it to a local merchant. Do not underestimate the quantity of wastes that a single pig can produce. It is estimated that a medium sized pig of 110 lbs. (50 kg) will produce manure weighing 1600 lbs. (720 kg) in one year. If you add the food wastes, the annual total wastes of just one medium sized pet pig can exceed 2200 lbs. (1000 kg). Consequently, you must build in advance a waste management policy that is compliant, sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Pig manure is an excellent fertilizer for herbs, vegetables and seeds, but it has to be composted for over 5-6 months before added to soil. Purchasing 2 big compost bins per 1 pig is a good start. Apart from pigs manure, you can add grass cuttings, leaves, newspapers and vegetable kitchen wastes to the compost bin. As a rule of thumb, pig manure produced in fall can finally be added to soil during next spring.
