6 Benefits of Building a Fish Pond with Tarpaulin

Building a fish pond out of Tarpaulin and Wood is less expensive than others of the same size, but it is not as strong. It is also an excellent choice for use on non-permanent land.

The disadvantage is that thieves can easily pull down the pond in order to steal from the fish farm. Flood and wind can easily pull down a wooden structure if adequate care is not taken to ensure that the supporting wood is well solidified.

Wood, soil, or brick can be used to construct tarpaulin ponds for catfish farming. For ponds with soil, dig a hole in the ground and cover it with a tarpaulin. Above-ground ponds can be built with a wooden framework or brickwork.

Consider the tarpaulin pond of catfish seedlings in content with water rich in algae/plankton (green water biota) as the main food source of catfish seedlings before spreading the seeds into the pond.

Catfish seedlings should be given a special pallet of catfish as many as four times per day to help them grow faster. In addition to pellets, natural foods such as snails, snails mas, shellfish, termites, and others can be given.

The pool water must also be replaced so that the water quality does not deteriorate and become smelly. The emergence of various diseases will be influenced by poor water quality.

Once a week or every two weeks, alternative water changes are performed by removing 10-30% of the pond water and adding the same amount of water to the discharge.

When catfish reach the age of one month, they should be selected and separated based on quality and size. It aims to grow catfish to be equally good in terms of size and quality of catfish.

Before going further, let’s understand what Tarpaulin is all about:

What is Tarpaulin?

Tarpaulin is a strong and thick polyethylene sheet. It can also be made from other materials. It is highly resistant, waterproof, and adjustable, and is commonly used to cover agricultural products and other items.

Tarpaulin quality varies depending on the manufacturer, and it is measured by GSM (Gram Per Square Metre). A large tarpaulin tank is essential for commercial fish farming.

If properly maintained and managed, 200 – 520 GSM tarpaulin sheets can be used for one to two-season crops for making small tarpaulin tanks.

6 Benefits of Building a Fish Pond with Tarpaulin

The advantages of a tarpaulin fish tank are as follows:

1. It is flexible, as water can adjust itself within the tank.

2. Ammonia management is simple when compared to cement tanks.

3. When compared to RAS, very little water needs to be rotated/replaced.

4. Bioflock development is simple.

5. Simple to catch fish.

6. It is also transferable.

Difference/Comparison Between Tarpaulin Pond And Concrete Pond

1. Tarpaulin pond can be moved while concrete pond cant be moved

2. A concrete pond can easily be converted to a pig house in case you don’t want to rear fish again while a Tarpouline pond cant is converted to a Pig house.

3. The concrete pond is very much durable, it lasts longer than a tarpaulin pond.

4. The tarpaulin is good in the sense that, even if it’s your permanent resident you build the tarpaulin pond, you can pack the tarpaulin and use the land space for something else. While if it was a concrete pond, you have to break the blocks and destroy them before using the land for something else.

What Are The Procedure for Establishing a Fish Pond

1 Required Materials/Resources

Testing kits for Ammonia meter, PH meter, and thermometer.

Tarpaulin sheet of minimum 500 GSM.

Aerator.

2. Selection of Site

Plain land should be preferred over uneven land. The availability of fresh water is the first criterion.

3. Establishing Fish Tank (Fish pond)

1. Marking for Circle

After collecting all the required things take a measuring tape.

Mark a point anywhere in the land as the Tank’s center.

Place the starting point of the tape and make a circle around it with 2 meter’s radius.

Mark all the measuring with any substance like lime.

2. Establishing Iron Frame

Completely fill the circle with a single layer of bricks using sand and cement.

Make a circular fence around the periphery of the circle using iron mesh.

3. Placing Tarpaulin Sheet

The tarpaulin sheet is fixed according to the established iron mesh.

Make an out let at the centre of tank connecting it with aerator.

Firmly fix the sheet with mesh
